Dealing with Lag
LAGedy LAG LAG, how we hate you! Every one has Lag to deal with on occasion.
When in RotMG try the following;
In our homes the things we do on computers can contribute to our lag issues.
Other possible sources of Lag
Steam Game Interface
With Steam you have access to hundreds of games, some free and some for purchase. Playing Realm of the Mad God is a free game. I know that you can create a RotMG account on Steam and link it to a browser account. I have heard that there are some problems doing this but I am not sure if they still exist or not. Go to the Steam website and the installation is a small green box on the upper right of the browser.
Flash Projector
The Adobe Flash Projector is a replacement for your browser. It is supposed to reduce or eliminate lag. You can find more information about the Flash Projector in the Realmeye Wiki
Chrome browser Fix
There was a browser fix that some people claim fixes their Chrome browser lag. I never got that fix working for me. I used to have it posted here but removed it. If you want to try it check out the realmeye forums and search for Chrome.
When in RotMG try the following;
- Check to see if you are playing on the best server. You can do that by selecting your servers and then the BEST SERVER option at the top.
- During peak internet times (you know when they are) the servers are very busy. Try to find a realm that has few people in it. More people can (not will) produce lag depending on the classes they are using such as Assassins and Necros.
- DECA has integrated some options to help reduce lag (used to be decamenu). From your RotMG screen select "o" then select "Graphics" try turning off "Draw Shadows", "Hardware acceleration". Lower "Particle Effect", "UI Quality".
In our homes the things we do on computers can contribute to our lag issues.
- Did you just switch computers recently? A different computer can play slower, it may not be able to keep up with what is going on.
- Even a new computer that is more powerful can play slower. The cause could be a new operating systemor perhaps it is bloated with a lot of programs and apps that are running taking CPU time or internet bandwidth.
- Try running a check for malware, or close down some other programs that are running in the background. You can check a windows computer by using the Task manager. Please make sure you know what you are doing if you are closing down some running programs.
- Some laptops when running on batteries will switch to a lower processing speed which will definitely slow things down. Plug your laptop in and adjust the processing speed.
- Are you downloading files? This could lag out your connection.
- Are you streaming music, video, movies or perhaps watching something on Youtube, communicating on Skype? This could lag out your connection. In many cases with the faster internet from your provider you may not have issues running these at the same time as your game. Just be aware that it is possible.
- Is your computer on a home network? If it is check the other computers, iPads, Smart phones, Xbox or Playstation and any other devices that are on it and make sure that they are not doing something to lag you out. Make sure your Mom is not watching Opra over Youtube.
- Are you running a wireless connection? If so do you have full bars on your connection? If not try moving to an area where you get a better connection.
- If possible try changing your connection from wireless to wired ethernet.
- Some older routers sometimes need to be reset to get back your speed. If you don't know the commands to reset your router, then just power it down, count to 10 and power it back up.
- Try restarting your computer.
- You might want to Google for a speed test app to run on your computer to check if you are getting the speeds advertised by your provider.
- Your provider may be throttling the speed of Realm of the Mad God game and other games that have a similar network profile at certain times of the day.
- It is entirely possible that there are internet related slow downs due to more people on such as after school, after work, after supper and definitely on the weekends.
Other possible sources of Lag
- There could be too many people in a realm, too many people on the Realm servers and perhaps the Realm network may be slower than normal dealing with all the people. I have seen the realm lag out when you have tons of bots in the nexus.
- If you still have LAG it could be browser related. Try running a different browser, most are a simple quick download and install is a piece of cake. Just try it, you may also find something you like in a new browser. There is Opera, Chrome, Firefox and a bunch of others.
- Chrome has had some problems and a solution was found to eliminate them. I am not sure if this fix is still required but check the Chrome fix below. The fix does not work for me but others have had luck.
- There is another solution called Flash Projector. See how to install that below.
- Another solution which works for me, is to use Steam which uses their own interface to play the game.
