How not to get scammed
Learning to trade is easy. In real life if you want to trade or sell something usually the person you are trading with is in front of you. In this game everyone is basically anonymous even if you know that persons game name they still are anonymous. There are a lot of nice and honorable people that play this game. But, there are a bunch of slimy cheating low life scum that call themselves human. These are the scum you have to be prepared for all time.
When trading, make absolutely sure that the other guy has his items highlighted before clicking on your trade button. Never be in a rush to complete the trade.
When trading your multiple items/pots for something the other guy is offering make sure that when you are finished highlighting all your items that the other guy still has his items highlighted before clicking on the trade button. A popular scam is for the other guy to unhighlight an item while you are highlighting an item. Always and I mean always check the full trade offerings from the other guy before you click the trade button.
Please take your time when trading, make sure that everything is highlighted before you click on the trade button. Never rush a trade.
The BIG Scam (#1) - don't get caught!
A while back Steam and Kabam teamed to release 6 new skins. Essentially, you have to either buy Steam things or get achievements in Steam to get access to these skins. It is possible to trade these skins through a Steam client to other Steam client or you can unlock it into RotMG and it shows up in a gift chest.
A popular scam is for people to contact you saying that they will take LIFE pots or items in RotMG for a trade of the skin through Steam. Don't do this!!!! Unless its your best friend in real life. I don't care who the person is with the Steam skin. Make them trade it through RotMG. If you are supposed to pay more than 8 life pots then buy Foul, Acclaim or something else and trade it to them all at once for the item.
Example: Steam Gentleman skin is being sold for 20 Life. The guy has the skin in his inventory. Tell him you will trade him 6 Acclaims and 2 Life for it. Acclaims (at the time) are going for 3 to 4 Life. You are a smart buyer and get the Acclaims for 3 Life. Now you have 6 Acclaims worth 18 Life and 2 Life pots for 20 life. If he does not go for that deal then ask him what it will take in your 8 inventory slots to make the deal. Sometimes you may have to work a bit for it. Never give more than 8 items for anything, if he demands more than 8 items it is a scam. A legitimate trader will take these items knowing that he is getting his value or better because he can trade the Acclaims for 4 life if he is lucky. If he does not go for an 8 item trade then walk away!
This example goes for anything that someone is selling that is more than 8 Life, such as a rare class skin which could be selling for more than 20 life.
The BIG Scam (#2) - don't do it, please!
*** Note: UGC cards are discontinued but this is still true for any replacement card
Trading for UGC cards, never works unless you are trading your real life friend. Don't trust your guildies, don't trust your online RotMG friends (wow Bluenoser is cynical, but I know of many cases where guildies or online RotMG friends scammed others). There is no way to know if the card is valid, used or just a figment of someones twisted mind. Just don't buy them, unless they give you the card information first and you try it out which only a non scammer may do.
Other things to watch out for
Example 1: During a UT unsoulbound event you may see a trade offer of 10 life for Ogmur. Since you only have 8 slots that can be traded at a time you have a problem. How to solve and not be scammed. First if the guy says he won't scam you, please please don't trust that remark. That remark could just be part of the scam.
Example 2: People selling keys or people buying keys. This is a risky trade always. Its good to find someone that is trust worthy but its getting harder now to find a trustworthy key seller.
Example 3: Someone saying give me the stuff now and I will go to the vault and get you my stuff. That is just plain silly. I see this happening enough that I had to mention it.
I have been scammed
Even following my own rules I get scammed occasionally, usually it is because I am not paying attention to what is going on. Don't complain, the sorry son of biotch is probably laughing his head off. Mark the person who scammed you as ignored and move on. Someone suggested that if you happen to see the guild he is in report him to the founder. I have mixed feelings about this because the guild probably already knows and does not care so I would not waste my time.

- Tell the trader that you will trade 8 life for the Ogmur on the first trade and give him 2 life on the second trade. If he says he wants all 10 life first then try my second solution below.
- Another solution for this trade would be to trade him an item that is worth 3 life such as an Acrop or Acclaim along with 7 life. Then after that first trade is done buy back your item for 3 life. You will have met the conditions safely.
Example 2: People selling keys or people buying keys. This is a risky trade always. Its good to find someone that is trust worthy but its getting harder now to find a trustworthy key seller.
- Generally a seller of a key does not play in a dungeon that someone pays for. This is usually part of the negotiations.
- You should ask around to see if the seller or buyer is trust worthy. Take a quick minute and check realmeye.com see if the person is listed as a scammer. If they have their privacy turned on for realmeye.com ask them to turn it off so you can check them out. Check them out on the forums by searching their game name.
- If you are buying a key such as a Tomb key then insist on paying once the Tomb is opened and you are inside the tomb. At the very least pay no more than 1 life up front and the rest once you are in.
- If you are selling the key take half the price up front unless you know the buyer.
- If you are about to pay a seller for a key, make sure part of the negotiations up front is that upon payment they open the dungeon.
- Even after all this time if you have been scammed your only recourse is word of mouth. Mark the guy a scammer on realmeye.com and that is pretty much all you can do.
Example 3: Someone saying give me the stuff now and I will go to the vault and get you my stuff. That is just plain silly. I see this happening enough that I had to mention it.
